The Grand Haven Coast Guard Festival has been a cherished tradition on since 1937, and each year it kicks off with the Tri-Cities YMCA’s 5K, 10K, and Fun Run—a celebration of community, movement, and milestones.

For the 11th consecutive year, Trinity Health Grand Haven Bariatrics and Weight Management proudly joined the event, bringing together a team of patients and staff who’ve turned their health journeys into finish-line victories. This year, the excitement reached new heights—even in the rain—with the addition of a new team from Trinity Health Grand Rapids, led by Eric Krebill, MD, Medical Director of Bariatric Surgery for both Grand Haven and Grand Rapids. Their combined presence highlighted the strength and unity across our bariatric programs, celebrating transformation, resilience, and community. “This race is more than just a run—it’s a symbol of how far our patients have come,” said Dr. Krebill. “To see them cross that finish line, many for the first time, is incredibly powerful.”

The tradition began in 2014, when Kelly Liggett, exercise physiologist, and her team invited patients to join them in the 5K. “We had 19 patients that first year,” Kelly shared. “Now, more than a decade later, over 650 people have walked or run with us. It’s become a tradition of its own.”

This year, Trinity Health Grand Haven once again served as the presenting sponsor of the Coast Guard City USA Run. The combined Grand Haven and Grand Rapids teams included 56 patients and staff, many of whom are first-time participants to this event.

“More than one-third of our runners this year were doing something they never thought possible,” Kelly said. “It’s a huge confidence boost. Race day is emotional, joyful, and one of the most rewarding days of the year.”

To celebrate each participant’s journey, Trinity Health staff—including Dr. Krebill—welcomed finishers with medals and high-fives, honoring every step that brought them to the finish line.
